President Abraham Lincoln, patriotic message

Why the United States of America Is Truly Great

As a proud American citizen, I began the day with expressions of patriotism and singing patriotic songs. But I was amazed to see the sentiment #AmericaWasNeverGreat trending on Twitter. It was immediately clear that those expressing a negative opinion of American history had six main points that I believe are emotionally biased, and not altogether informed or understanding of human history and nature. Below are their points, followed by a recap of my Twitter corrections or counter-points as to Why America Is Truly Great. Stated in 140 characters or less it’s not an exhaustive or authoritative literary work of course. They are something to consider before jumping on board some victimized, history altering, misinformed agenda to undermine the true nature of the greatest country ever to impact the affairs of mankind.

Their 6 Points or Opinions of America’s Failure:

  1. Slavery
  2. Genocide
  3. Inequality
  4. Imperialism
  5. Racism (and the “wall”)
  6. Oppression

My Twitter responses to these six points are below, plus two additional bonus points! Why America Is Truly Great:

I understand that as Americans we do not have all of the answers. I also never expect people or things of this world to be perfect because nothing on earth is perfect. Earlier I wrote about an understanding of human history and nature which teaches me that humans have always, and will always, mess up even the best ideas.

That’s where I know that America Is Truly Great!

The Founding Fathers of the United States of America took the best ideas of human history and nature and wrote into the fabric of our country the principles and values that would allow future generations the ability to work out the issues of Life and Liberty, and begin to correct the ills of their society then and the ills of our society today. I believe they understood the downfalls of mankind and that they could not solve all the evils of the world ever, but acted “to create a more perfect Union” than the world has ever known. America has immeasurably more victories and sacrifices to be proud of than any of our failures.

I believe that those today thinking that government is the answer should consider these same truths. We should truly understand, defend, honor and protect the immeasurable legacy we have inherited. As American citizens in this shared world, we are responsible to carry the torch forward, and utilize the tools of self-government to better handle the issues we face, to raise the bar in defense of humanity, in defense of equality and liberty, in defense of truth and justice, in defense of life and human dignity, and in defense of people’s rights to work out their own Faith, Family and Freedom.
